Hello

Unfortunately, upon checking my mail today I received a notice that the grid my server was on experienced a ring of kernel panics, which resulted in data loss. Long story short, I lost my entire container aside from a backup of the web data I made a week or two ago. What this means is that dAmnIdlers will most likely be on hiatus until I re-write it, and my dAmnIT site may have lost its database. While I do keep backups, the way the server went down [for some reason] caused the remote server to delete the folder containing the backups, so the only recent data I actually have is the pages from the website, which I kept on a flash drive. There's a chance that I may have a backup of the ~40,000 dAmnIT quotes from before dA took it down, but I can't make any promises as I haven't looked through anything yet.

In any case, I do apologize for the downtime. This is about the worst thing that can happen to a server, and unfortunately my host does not keep backups.

Edit: Unfortunately, after looking over the backups that didn't go through, I see that I am missing a great deal of data, as well as some of the scripts for the back-end of things. While this is extremely unfortunate, I do take blame for the fact that I had not had the time to add more methods of backing things up. What this means for dAmnIT and #dAmnIdlers is that I'll have to completely rewrite them, and, unfortunately, I don't have the time. Neither of them were really a means of income, and as I'm not employed at the moment, that means they're pretty low on my list of priorities. Over the 1-2 years both projects have been live, they pulled close to a million views, and were accessed by over 5000 unique visitors, over 1000 of which logged in via dA to do things like join #dAmnIdlers or submit quotes. It saddens me to lose the projects to data loss, but things like this do happen.

When the time comes when I have the free time to rewrite the projects I will do so, but as of now, I cannot give a date for either.

I've been asked a few times now about how often usericons on the new dAmnIT page are refreshed. The system I'm currently using to cache the usericons will only refresh an icon if:

1) A quote submitted by that user or containing the usericon of that user is viewed;

and

2) It has been 24 hours since the last time that user's icon was cached.

You can view an active dump of the currently cached usericons here, which gives the username, the URL to their usericon, and how many seconds it's been since the last update. For those wondering, there's 86400 seconds in a day, so if the number on the far right is equal or greater than 86400 and you view a quote by X user or containing the usericon of X user, it will update the usericon to the latest one provided by dA.

As far as other features for the dAmnIT replacement go, there are two things on my list right now that've been requested: reporting quotes that people believe shouldn't be there, and allowing non-dA members to view hotlinked quotes. For both of those, it'd help me a lot if you would comment here if you want either of those features. If more people seem to want them added, I'll go ahead and add them. For other feature requests, you can ask here. Just explain what you want and how you'd like it to work and it'll go into great consideration.

Oh, hi.

Out of curiousity, how many of you play League of Legends? If you do play, what's your level and favorite champ/role?

"growing up" isn't "growing old". No, they're two different things. "growing up" is realizing that life isn't just about you; messing up affects more than just you; people depend on you, not just the other way around; there's not always going to be someone to bail you out anymore; your choices permanently affect the rest of your life; and instead of sitting around waiting for advice from others, it's now your job to give advice to the next generation. We all say we "can't wait to grow up", but when we finally get there, it's no paradise on some tropical island. But at the same time, those who say "growing up sucks" just haven't grown up enough yet. Tomorrow's a new day.

I don't know about you, but I think I'd rather get up and try again than stay down and give up. Life looks better on your feet than it does on the floor.

Well, it's a bit of a beta and something I whipped up last night. I've had drafts laying around for years, but I've only ever used it for my own purposes. You can test out the search function here. It requires login via dA to avoid spamming (like the rest of my tools that have databases.), and is very fast.

Keep in mind that it isn't supposed to be awesome! Let me know if you find it useful, if you wouldn't mind.

(tl;dr; for dA devs, add this to dAmnIT itself! People have been asking for it for years.)
